Abstract: | In this article, Tanzania's role in international relations is viewed from out with Tanzania, i.e., in the context of a) the development of the non-aligned countries as a 'power bloc' or a new force in international relations, and b) the gathering storm of anti-imperialist and anti-racialist national liberation in Southern Africa. While refraining from presenting a detailed chronological account of the post-colonial period, the discussion is divided into the following sections: The international context of non-alignment - Non-alignment and neo-colonialism/imperialism - The first phase of Tanzania's non-alignment (1961-1967) - The impact of Arusha socialism on Tanzania's international role (1967-74) - Tanzania's role in Africa in the context of national liberation, anti-imperialism and anti-racialism (1974-1979/80) - Nyerere's role in the evolution of Tanzania's international orientation (as seen from outside the country).
