Abstract: | The partition of sub-Saharan Africa in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries among the various European colonial powers evidenced a link between economic forces and foreign policy-making. The present author seeks to elucidate and classify the methodological problems posed by the attempt to understand the links between economics and forward policy-making in late nineteenth-century Africa, and to evaluate the results of recent rethinking about and research on the economics of the partition. Critical methodological problems remain unsolved and the debate, especially that between neo-Marxist and orthodox scholars, has become more rather than less complicated. Notes, abstract in French. |
