Abstract: | After an introduction which shows clearly the seriousness of South Africa's threat to the stability of the Frontline States, this article deals with the options available to the Frontline leaders in their search for security. The various southern African states have practised a number of strategies designed either to deter South African actions or to combat ongoing destabilization. These efforts can be roughly grouped into five categories, principally: Pan-African military associations; foreign military assistance; close economic and political relations with the West; nonagression pacts with South Africa; and ad hoc regional (bilateral) security agreements. The degree of effectiveness of each of these measures is looked at in turn, following a brief review of South Africa's available forms of military and economic power to bring to bear on the region.
