Abstract:In the introduction is sketched how Ethiopia under Italian occupation was hardly opened up to foreign interests. In 1953 USAID started activities in Ethiopia which ment the emergence of the neo-colonial era in that country. In a chapter 'The dependent economy' Ethiopia's neo-colonial status as manifested in its economy is examined. The country's dependence on external capital is demonstrated. After a description of agriculture follows a chapter on 'Ethiopian demography in economic development'. Finally the question is raised 'Is Ethiopia underdeveloped?'. In the context of Ethiopia's development strategy the eventual contribution of a reduction in the fertility and in the rate of population growth to the eradication of underdevelopment is discussed.
