Abstract: | After the conclusion of the Nile Waters Agreement of 1959 between the United Arab Republic and the Republic of the Sudan, the government of Sudan started to organize the evacuation of the 50.000 persons of the area to be flooded in Wadi Halfa district before the end of July 1963 as specified in the Agreement. Although the choice of a new home was at first left to the Halfawis themselves, the final decision was made by the government. This paper describes in detail the hard negotiations between the National Committee, elected by the affected area of Wadi Halfa, and the government, and the people's initial fierce reactions to the government's decision on Khashm-al-Girba, as the new resettlement area.
