Abstract:In an earlier article on 'State intervention in the Asante economy' (Universitas (Legon), 3 (1974) the present author suggested that a study of the role of British colonial administration in economic development in Asante in the early twentieth century would show that its most significant aspect lay in 'removing traditional political restraints on the accumulation of private capital and thus increasing the sources of finance for economic activities' and that for this reason, colonial rule was welcome to traders and other men of property. Here some correspondence on death duties which demonstrates this point is produced, together with comments by colonial officials and some explanatory notes. The letters are preceded by a note on death duties and on the signatories and followed by a comment on the origin of political conflict in Asante. Notes.
