Abstract:This paper attempts, using some relatively simple techniques, to study some of the demographic characteristics of urbanisation in Nigeria, that is, characteristics which relate to the number of urban residents and the number of cities. Attention is focussed on characteristics like the degree of urbanization, the number of people in the urban population, the total number of urban units, the number of people residing in urban units of a specified size range, in short the urban structure of the country. As the 1952-53 census still seems to be the best source of demographic information available for Nigeria, the study concentrates on analysing data from this census. Notes, tab.
