Abstract:	The Igbo were among the leading exporters of slaves from West Africa to Europe and the Americas from the 17th to the 19th century, This paper shows how the Aro of the Cross River basin area, Nigeria, emerged as the leading slave traders in the Igbo hinterland. It examines the strategies the Aro adopted in the different ecological zones of Igboland (the southeastern zone, southern Igboland, the riverine and coastal towns, northern Igboland) and the degree to which they used violence to expand in each zone.
