Abstract:In Buganda, where the village of Kitende, focus of this analysis, is situated, there was a major obstacle to the development of commodity production. This was the weight of traditional landlord/tenant relations, restructured and reinforced by the 1900 Agreement between the colonial state and a newly reorganized landed oligarchy. The analysis shows that the principal contradiction in Kitende is between the peasantry as a whole (including land labourers) on one side and imperialism, comprador, bureaucrat and landlord power on the other side. The main cause of the poverty of the village can be directly traced to this contradiction. This is because the surplus labour that is extracted by these forces from direct producers in the village in various forms is almost never ploughed back into the village economy. What the landlord extracts through various forms of tenancies and through wage employment, he pumps back mainly into the purchases of real estate in Kampala and secondarily into trade (shops) around the village and elsewhere. The guestion is raised how representative Kitende is of other villages in Uganda. Notes, tab.
