Abstract:Purpose is to discover the incidence of illegitimacy in one African township in South Africa, to investigate the fate of unmarried mothers and their children, and to examine the relationship between marriage payments (which have survived modernization and urbanization) and illegitimacy. Research was conducted in the Wattville township in Benoni and data were gathered from a sample of 100 houses in which illegitimate children had been registered during the period January 1959 to August 1966.
