Abstract: | The teaching of the official languages in Black schools has always attracted attention and not less so since the Cillie-Commission Report was tabled early in 1980. In the survey reported on here an attempt is made to probe into the concrete reality of teaching English and Afrikaans in Kwa-Zulu Primary Schools. The introduction of the official languages is prescribed by the Department of Education; but the success of a curriculum depends on the spirit of the teachers who have to carry it out. The Department of Didactics, University of Zululand, designed a questionnaire to investigate the teachers' thinking about the official language policy and the difficulties encountered in teaching English and Afrikaans. The results of the questionnaires for teachers in primary schools and for principals of primary schools are presented and analysed here. Tab., fig., app. |
