| Abstract: | Deals with the development during 1959-1969 of the teaching of French ('ordinary' level) as a second European language in the English-speaking countries of West Africa. After some information on French as the second international language of Africa South of the Sahara follows a survey of the principal steps in the development of the examinations. Another section deals with the innovations: the 4 language skills; oracy before literacy; language testing: objective tests and personal judgment; the African context; language content; new teaching materials.
