Abstract: | The investigation is based on an analysis of the content of personal documents in the form of 606 essays written by White (229) and Black (377) South African high school pupils during 1969 and 1970. The pupils were in the three final years of secondary school education and were all resident in Johannesburg and the Witwatersrand and they could choose to write an essay on 'What happened on Saturday night' or 'My Street'. The essays demonstrate the enormous differences in the South African urban situation between privileged White and underprivileged Black. Parts of the article: Methods - Sex and age of the respondents - Essay choice - What happened on Saturday night (Violence and its outcomes; Entertainment and dating) - My street - Conclusions.
