Abstract: | Because of the absence of substantial research very little is know about patterns of drug-taking among young people in Nigeria. This situation led to the inception of the present study which was undertaken to examine patterns of self-reported drug experimentation among secondary school students in Bendel State in order to determine the kinds of drugs students have access to, those they have actually used, frequency of usage and students' attitudes to drug use and drug penalties. The research reported here, carried oat between 1977 and 1979, covered the major urban areas in Bendel State (Benin City, Sapele, Warri-Effurun) and one local government area (Akoko-Edo). Nearly 1500 questionnaires were distributed by the student researchers to classes 3, 4, and 5 in eighteen male, female and co-educational secondary schools. The response rate was over 90%. Only data from classes 4 and 5 - students near the end of their secondary school careers - have been used in the present study. Ref., tab. |
