Abstract:Description of the invasion in Guinea on November 22, 1970, and its aftermath. A UN special mission concluded that the invasion was carried out by naval and military units of the Portuguese armed forces, acting in conjunction with Guinean dissident elements from outside. There exist two conflicting versions: the Portuguese say they had no part in the affair and imply that it was the work of Guinean dissidents; the Guineans say the Portuguese planned and executed the attack in order to topple Toure's regime, although the Guinean political enemies labeled mercenaries participated. The author suggests that the Portuguese and Guinean exiles acted together, but with different objectives in mind, the first going after the African Independence Party of Guinea and Cape Verde, (PAIGC) and their prisoners, the others after Toure.
