Abstract: | This is the second of three essays in which the author reconsiders portions of the late E.E. Evans-Pritchard's ethnography on the Nuer. In this brief essay an attempt is made to clarify the political role which Nuer prophets assumed within the traditional Nuer political system. In retrospect the superficial discussion of prophets in Evans-Pritchard's monography (The Nuer, Oxford, 1940) obscures our understanding of the nature of Nuer politics. Most of the data on Nuer prophets appears elsewhere than in Evans-Pritchard's ethnography, and the greather part of this material os concerned with the Nuer prophets Bung Ngundeng and Gwek. Consequently in this paper is spoken of Nuer prophets in general from what is known about Ngundeng and Gwek. A broader concern which results from this essay centres on the comparison of the Nuer political system with that of the Dinka, the Anuak and the Shilluk. Ref., notes. |
