Abstract: | The jihads of Usman dan Fodio and Muhammad Abd-allah Hassan for many years have attracted the interest of historians and others. This paper's interest is based on the supposition that the course of jihads may be patterned by their situational context and find their fortunes affected by structural conditions in society. The fact that two religious leaders started out with essentially similar objectives but eventually arrived at virtually opposite positions calls attention to the possibility that different societal conditions may have led to the contrasting developments in the two cases. The two jihads are compared in order to explore the political conditions necessary for religious objectives to be attained: The Shehu's jihad - The Mullah's jihad - Moral. Ref. |
