Abstract: | After a discussion of women in African traditional society, the article examines women in African traditional religion, with particular emphasis on Nigeria, in the following chapters: 1) African women and social well-being through religion. 2) Participation of women in religious life (priesthood - special services to divinities and sacred places - women as diviners and 'medicine men'). 3) Women as 'wives' of divinities. 4) Women and taboos in the traditional religion (taboos connected with menstruation - the child born with feet foremost - birth of twins, triplets and quadruplets). 5) Purification. 6) Woman climbing the oilpalm tree. The conclusion is that while the African traditional society did not give the woman fer proper place in society, she was not considered as a slave. Notes. |
