Abstract: | The present study is of one religious movement - one of those which were seen by the colonial governments in Africa as potential sources of political subversion - which began in the village of Sala Wane, Kwilu Collectivity, Bulungu Zone, Kwilu Sub-Region, Bandundu Region of Zaire. What started as faith healing in 1944 ended in 1946 in the exile of twenty-five villagers and their families to the Oshwe area to the north, in the Mai-Ndombe Sub-Region. A detailed description and analysis of these events, especially of government reactions, sheds light on the motives of those who began the movement and of those who tried to suppress it. The study also gives insights into the religious landscape of the Kwilu during the colonial years, permitting more valid generalizations in the future. Part 1: The content of the religious phenomena of the Spirit Movement at Sala Wane. Part 2: The interaction of the movement with the Belgian colonial government. App., bibliogr., map, notes. |
