Abstract: | During 1977, the writer was engaged in an attempt to get broadly based participation in self-help projects through the use of the process approach to community development. The 'target communities' were Eldorado Park, a residential area developed for Coloured families who had been involuntarily relocated from five different areas of Johannesburg during the previous seven years, and Kliptown, an adjoining slum area. A priority felt-want, generated by the people themselves, was for an adult education programme. The writer describes the functional literacy class which she taught, the problems involved, the class members, their backgrounds and motivations, and the group process. Notes. |
