Abstract: | Presentation of several chants used in the juulnordu (circumcison rites), based on interviews during the author's stay in Maroua in 1971/72. The juunordu chants of the Fulbe of Northern Cameroun have been neither reported nor studied, probably because of their secret character. They are gradually disappearing from the people's memories because they are not written and moreover because the society is changing. After a sketch of the cricumcision rites, seventeen chants are transcribed and translated with food notes. The article ends with a discussion of the special character of these chants as one of the genres of Fulbe oral literature. Bibl., notes, figure. |
