Abstract:Cultural contacts between the Eastern Mediterranean and the Maghreb after 750 B.C. are documented both in literary sources and by archaeological evidence. What is less known is the extent of East-West contacts before 750 B.C., and the exact nature of these contacts after that date. The aim of this paper is to re-examine these two questions in the light of two recent archaeological discoveries in the Eastern Mediterraneen: the frescoes on the Aegean island of Thera, and the numerous Tinnit figurines found underwater off the Phoenician coast.
