Abstract: | Though some of Salih al-Fullani's works were also known in Morocco, it is in India that the only two of his books so far published have appeared and in India that an early twentieth-century scholar boldly advanced his name as one of the 'Regenerators of Islam' (mujaddidun) for the twelfth century of the hijra (1688-1785). By contrast, none of his works, so far as the author of this article knows, has been conserved in any public collection in West Africa and to date he has only come across one quotation from him in West African Arabic writings. This introductory note on the life and work of Salih al-Fullani is designed to draw attention to an African scholar who reached the highest ranks of international Islamic scholarship in his day and whose achievements merit more attention from modern scholars than they have yet received.
