Abstract: | The Hausa language spoken in the Blue Nile Province of the Sudan has generally received less Arabic influence than its Hausaland counterpart, although the former is surrounded by numerically and culturally superior Arabs. Also its numeral system, which does not utilise Arabic loans, is to be noted. The reason for these seemingly paradoxical findings could be attributed to several extralinguistic phenomena surrounding the Hausa communities in the Sudan. Bibliogr., fig., notes. |
