Title:Reconstructing the Lenis feature in Proto-Edoid

Periodical:Journal of African Languages and Linguistics
Volume:2
Issue:1
Pages:39-67
Language:English
Geographic term:West Africa
Subject:Edo language
Abstract:What the author tries to show is that no reconstruction of the Proto-Edoid (PE) consonant system can ignore the Lenis feature which was extensively employed in PE, and which is still directly attestable in many modern Edoid languages. Even where the feature does not exist synchronically, the contrast is reflected in oppositions such as implosive/non-implosive, stop/fricative, etc. Sections: The Edoid languages - Lenis/non-lenis in Edoid languages - Lenis/non-lenis consonants of Proto-Edoid - Sound changes - Lenis/ non-lenis, breathy-voicing, devoicing, and consonant harmony - Conclusion. Ref., notes, app. Comments on PE reconstructed consonants - Edoid comparative word list.
