Abstract: | In the author's opinion the principal shortcoming of contemporary Akan (Ghana) studies is caused by the general tendency of West African language scholars to pursue their study from a historical perspective. For example, they claim that Akan shares the principle of vowel harmony with many other West African languages. This view is not shared by the author. It is the same with the tone system.
