Abstract:Most analyses of prayer have concentrated on ritual and symbolism rather than on literary issues of structure and content. This paper attempts to contribute to this relatively unexplored and potentially fruitful field of inquiry by considering some structural aspects of prayer in the Kpele cult of the Ga people of southeastern Ghana. During the annual agricultural rites of the Kpele cult, Ga priests (wulomo; pl. wulomei) frequently pray to spiritual beings. Do these prayers adhere to a consistent pattern? What variations occur in Ga priests' prayers? What are some major sources of consistency and diversity in Ga traditional prayer? These are the main structural questions to which this paper is addressed. In addition to the general analytical discussion of Ga prayer structure examples of Kpele prayers are presented in an appendix. App., charts, notes.
