Abstract: | The region of research is a segment of the Lower Niger, precisely the riverine settlements within, until recently, what used to be known as Aboh territory. The indigenous population belongs to the Igbo socio-cultural world. By the second decade of the present century, however, various immigrant groups began to join the indigenous inhabitants. From personal observations in the region since the mid-1950s, it has been remarked that certain changes have been occurring in those situations in which the inhabitants interacted with their gods or spirits, especially outside the context of formal worship. Subsequently, attention was directed to examining the alternations in those circumstances of informal, but overt, man-god interactions. There followed investigations into what can be termed globally as the impact of contemporary socio-economic developments on the informal interactions between man and his gods in the region. - Fig., notes. |
