Abstract:A definition of the High God concept among the Yoruba cannot be attempted without referring to the whole of Yoruba religion. The author of the present article investigates the conditions and pre-conceptions which influenced the writers of the copious literature which exists on the subject: Accounts of Ancient Travellers-Fetish and Fetishism; Missionaries and Anthropologists; Influence of Christianity and Islam; High God, Remote God; Ethnological Approach to Definition of the High God; Difficulties of the Enquiries and Possible Sources of Misinterpretation; Ase-Vital Power.
