Abstract:Purpose is to correlate the somewhat divergent and often contradictory data presented by the various authors, to determine whether in fact there does exist a specific category of mhondoro, 'tribal spirits' who have supernatural significance, and to indicate the significance of these spirits for Shona religion in particular and for Shona culture in general. Sections: 1) Identity (particular spirits - mhondoro of the skies - snake spirits - diverse categories distinguished - main categories of mhondoro). 2) Ritual (ritual for mhondoro spirits in general - ritual for supratribal mhondoro in particular). 3) Supratribal mhondoro in the total religious system. 4) General cultural significance.
