Abstract: | This study centres on the region known as Bututsi. An outline is given of the development of markets from traditional times through the colonial experience to the present. A discussion is held on the nature of the market system of this area in the light of present theory and with reference to the information gathered during fieldwork. The data leave much to be desired and are used only in an explanatory manner to indicate possible lines of approach to the geographical study of periodic-marketing. The study is nevertheless focused on Bututsi, and particularly on the Matana regional market, because, despite their deficiencies, the data do have a certain empirical descriptive value for a region which has been very little known. Sections: The traditional system - The impact of colonialism - Accordance with theory - Differential impact of modernization - Some conclusions and comparisons. Notes, table, figures. |
