Abstract:Fort Hall District, heartland of the Kikuyu plateau, is the traditional homeland of the Kikuyu people. The Kikuyu plateau plays an increasing part in the agricultural economy of Kenya. There is, in addition to the agricultural production, a considerable volume of trade carried on in a number of local markets. The volume is difficult to measure and does not appear in any of the official statistics. Described are the function, the significance (new, in a number of ways) and the increasingly important part of the markets in the development of the area, Sources, tables, figures.
