Abstract: | This survey primarily uncovers information concerning the extent to which the business law concepts of the Ethiopian Commercial Code and other codes have been absorbed by the average Ethiopian merchant and authorities charged with enforcement. A secondary purpose was to provide a profile of the businessmen of the Mercato (Addis Ababa's principle market area), their collective organizations, their legal disputes and the means by which they resolve them. Although there are some major conflicts in the Mercato between law and practices, this is due to lack of education or knowledge on the part of merchants with respect to accounting practices and registration requirements and reluctance of authorities to enforce many harsh legal provisions. The A's have not uncovered any resistance to the sophisticated new laws. With a growing awareness on the part of businessmen, they can be fully implemented. Notes. |
