Abstract:This article is concerned with dualism in the urbanization process using the concepts of central-place cheery and tests how this theory can be used in bridging the gap between the ural and urban subsystems in development planning. Sections: central place theory and hierarchy urban centres - central place theory and periodic market sub-system - periodic markets in Africa - periodic and daily markets in other parts of the world - periodic market place and urban place sub-systems: an emerging fusion of the present organisation - locational expansion - diffusion of trading functions - changes in the structure of urban place and market place sub-systems - towards a development strategy: the periodic market approach. Planning at the grassroots level will help the region bring jobs to the rural areas where the majority of the population reside, help reorient the towns from parasitic to generative rolos, and help in lessening the gap between hinterland and export enclaves.
