Abstract:This paper is a case study of how Kenyan urban women are beginning to penetrate the small-scale business sector, the formal sector above the level of hawker or market seller. It considers the following questions: what kind of women are going into business; what sort of enterprises are they undertaking; are they at a disadvantage in comparison with men? First the paper looks at the range of economic opportunities available to women in the city. It also looks at the differential opportunities for education and training open to males and females.
