Abstract: | Some form of assessment of a black child's aptitude for formal education is vital in order to plan his education more adequately in a homogeneous class group. The Aptitude Tests for School Beginners (the ASB) could be a suitable instrument for this purpose. Before a full-scale investigation of the predictive validity of the ASB for Black Grade 1 pupils could be undertaken, it was decided to carry out a pilot study to test a variety of possible measures. Problems encountered in the field in the gathering of the sample for the pilot study, the training of testers and the application of the measures used are discussed. Correlation data of the measures used and the testees' school examination marks are also presented. Significant correlations between the ASB, human figure drawing ability and academic success were found. Ref., tab., sum. in Afrikaans, French, and German. |
