Abstract:The object of this paper is to discuss the centrality of the ujamaa policy in the Tanzanian development strategy, and to point out novel features of the policy as well as its affinity to older policy solutions. The author discusses a number of implementational lessons that can be drawn from the policy and comments on a series of unresolved problems. In order to put the discussion into a proper perspective, the discussion is initiated with a brief sketch of traditional agriculture and settlement patterns in Tanzania. Notes, French summary.
