Abstract: | This paper reflects the author's personal reflections on Ujamaa vijijini in the light of his own experience and the existing vast literature. It is organised under six headings. The first examines the policy as propounded in 'Socialism and rural development' in 1967. The second deals with implementation of the policy in the first two years (1967-68). The third deals with the abandonment of the policy beginning in 1969. The fourth looks at the substitute of Ujamaa vijijini, that is villagization by operations. The fifth looks at institutional development to aid villagization. The last section is the conclusion. Notes. |
