Abstract: | Mãe Aurélia Correira was one of the most influential persons living in the Guinea-Bissau region during the first half of the 19th century. She is representative of many African and Eur-African women traders and commercial intermediaries (termed nharas in the Guinea-Bissau region) in West Africa from the 17th to the 19th centuries. This paper focuses on Mãe Aurélia's historical significance and delineates some of the challenges involved in writing about her and other West African women traders. Fig., map, notes, ref. |
