Abstract: | This short study was prompted by reflections on the current use of the mother tongue by educated adult Yoruba speakers, with particular regard to reading and writing in Yoruba. By questioning a small sample of university staff and students, an attempt has been made to find out on what occasions and for what purposes Yoruba speakers in this bilingual social group tend to choose Yoruba and on what occasions and for what purposes they tend to choose English.
