Abstract:Firstly, this article examines why and how the Carnegie Corporation became involved in African education, and the historical links with South Africa. This provides the background to the first Carnegie Inquiry into the poor white question in South Africa (1929-1932). Secondly, it studies the involvement of the Corporation from the 1950's onwards, in post-independence Africa, and in particular examines the contention that the Corporation's activities are closely linked to American foreign policy. - Notes.
