Abstract: | After independence the new states of West Africa have shown some willingness to estblish inter-state relations. Whereas some leaders wanted immediate political unification, others advocated a functional co-operation as a basis for regional integration. Hitherto, the international river and lake basis have been selected for joint interstate actions and integrated development. This article outlines the attempts at such an integrated development in four different subregions of West Africa: the River Niger Basin, the Chad Basin, the River Gambia Basin, and the Senegal River States.
