Abstract: | Because in the early 1960s pan-Africanism was considered to be the force which would promote a sound political and economic development, a number of regional and sub-regional organisations have been developed during the last decade, as the first steps towards greater African unity. This article discusses the history, nature, and experience of one of those sub-regional organizations in West Africa, namely the Organisation des états riverains du Sénégal (O.E.R.S.). Political dissension, according to the A., did not encourage the development of the O.E.R.S. hitherto. Parts of the article: Structure and organization - History and inter/member relations - Proposed O.E.R.S. programmes (development of the Senegal River Basin; monetary policy; industrial development; livestock and animal programmes; educational, cultural and social projects) - Conclusion.
