Abstract: | Recommendations of the Arable Lands Development Program (ALDEP) favour permanent settlement of the lands in eastern Botswana as a means of increasing agricultural production. The ALDEP preparation team has argued that the lack of water supplies at the lands has retarded arable production by discouraging earlier arrivals and later departures by villagers to and from the lands. The first section of this paper reviews studies presenting comparative information on permanent and seasonal lands residents. It discusses selected differences between village and lands economies; information on characteristics of permanent lands dwellers; and the role of water supplies in the process of permanent lands settlement. The second section presents recently collected data on a limited number of the issues raised in the first section. Discussion (p. 325-326), ref., tab. |
