Abstract:This paper is part of a study of volutary associations undertaken in Bamako from July 1962 to July 1965 for the Center for Social Science Research (Northwestern University) under the direction of Professor Paul Bohannan. Sources: figures on demography are taken from the provisional results issued by the Service des Statistiques du Mali, of a sample census made in 1960. The census questionnaires were used as basis for other computations. For a few wards wage-earners' or small business people's incomes were found in the questionnaires. Economic data from the National Income Survey and other peports. Historical data from the local archives and local traditions. 0ther sociological data are results of own investigation. After a historical introduction the author discusses: The Population of Bamako; The Economic Role of Bamako; Bamako Society; Social and Occupational Structure of the Lower Strata.
