| Abstract: | Some facts and figures on exploitation and exports. It is anticipated that production is likely to triple to 330 mtpa by the year 2000. By far the largest portion of this will be produced by the private mining industry including production for synfuels, the only exception probably being the Iscor metallurgical production at Grootegeluk. Even though ample recoverable reserves exist to meet all anticipated future energy and other requirements, continued involvement of the State, particularly in export control, is in the national interest. Whether the State should continue to control inland coal prices is presently being investigated. As to the involvement of private enterprise, it is anticipated that it would continue to expand its ownership of reserves, increase its share of production and will, should the State decide to expand the production of synfuels, probably seek greater involvement therein.
