Abstract:The Masters of Public Administration programme of the University of Ife originally was designed as an extension of the postgraduate Diploma in Public Administration (DPA). Persons who has distinguished themselves (by written examination) were permitted to proceed to the MPA programme which was the DPA plus thesis. Later, the MPA was established as a separate programme into which both DPA holders and non-DPA could be admitted. The objective of the MPA programme is: 'to provide an advanced and specialized course in Public Administration and Management. This course is particularly suitable for the mid-career officers who have had several years practical experience and who are reaching the higher levels of administrative management'. The author - strong advocate of the specialist as against the generalise administrator - describes the Masters Public Administration Programme at Ife in Nigeria where the new precepts about administrative training are being put into teaching practice.
