Abstract: | M. Ali Kettani, in his article 'Muslim East Africa; an overview' (in J. Inst. Muslim Minority Aff., 4(1982), 1/2, p. 104-119), presents an interesting analysis of the historical development of Islam in East Africa. But, in the article there is also a misrepresentation of facts which might endanger the good relationship between religions in a country like Tanzania. The present paper first corrects the misinformation through an analysis of the facts and further analyses the relation that exists between Christianity and Islam - historically and demographically. The paper takes up the socio-political dimension of the relation between the two religions and looks at what has been their contribution to the creation of a secular state like Tanzania. The discussion focuses on the following aspects: the household level, the village level and the national level. Notes, tab. |
