Abstract: | This paper challenges the idea of pre-Islamic Arabic origins of Yoruba music. If there exists a corpus of music designated as Islamic or pre-Islamic, Yoruba music is uniquely different from it. Those manifestations of Islamic music found in Yoruba music today are presumably attributable to Islamic penetration into Yorubaland. On the basis of this assumption, the author examines current views about the origins of the Yoruba particularly as they relate to music in order to be able to identify the Islamic musical elements incorporated within it. This leads to a treatment of what can be identified as Yoruba music, vis-à-vis Islamic music, and finally a discussion of elements which are manifestations of Islamic influence.
