Abstract:The Tlhaping are the Southern most representatives of the Tswana; the Taung reserve is situated in the Cape province and includes 2 Tlhaping chiefdoms. The material here presented refers exclusively to the Phuduhutswana chiefdom (1953: 31.000 inhabitants). The author deals with the subject of change mainly from the angle of some traditional institutions: Territorial and political groupings, ethnic composition, kinship and rank, marriage and family, sex and age and lastly external relations. A process of scattering of the population has taken place, there is a weakening of the chiefs powers, a general weakening of kinship ties, while the choice of a marriage partner is now much more a matter of decision by the couple concerned. Maps, tables. Genealogy of Tlhaping chiefs.
